Investor Education Programme
The Trinidad and Tobago Securities and Exchange Commission (TTSEC) as the regulator of the securities industry in Trinidad and Tobago is mandated to protect investors and encourage the growth and development of the industry.
Under Section 6 (g) of the Securities Act Chapter 83:02 of the Laws of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the TTSEC is mandated “to educate and promote an understanding by the public of the securities industry and the benefits, risks and liabilities associated with investing in securities”.
The TTSEC’s Investor Education (IE) Programme was launched in 2005 and strengthened in 2009 following the financial crisis of 2008. The instability that characterised both the global and domestic financial markets during this time caused anxiety among investors. Interestingly, this initiated a positive ripple effect, as it created a more receptive environment for education on investing.
Since then, the TTSEC’s IE programme has grown and expanded becoming more conducive and responsive to the needs of the various segments of the market, as reflected in the number of initiatives that have been developed and successfully implemented.
The programme is multi-faceted, involving a combination of on-line learning, development of learning resources, training, direct interaction with the public, collaboration with key stakeholders, and through the promotion of education and awareness on investing at a national level.
The TTSEC’s IE programme involves the followin:
- Investor Education website – investucatett.com, which houses all key IE tools, such as its IE Instructor’s Manual and Student Workbook, IE Online Course, IE Investing Game – www.InvestorQuest-tt.com; investing blogs; life stages, brochures, risk profile test, budget/investing calculators and much more;
- Investor Protection Mobile Application – available for investors and individuals to either lodge a complaint or report a scam;
- IE Outreach programme – includes free face-to-face or virtual outreach investor education sessions;
- National IE Fraud Awareness Campaigns;
- IE on social media – LinkedIn, Facebook; Instagram, YouTube, X;
- IE content on the Ministry of Education’s website – IE course and other supplemental material are now available on the Ministry of Education’s Student Learning Management System (SLMS);
- IE regional initiative – TTSEC has been a member of the International Forum for Investor Education (IFIE) Caribbean Working Group (CWG) for over 10 years, and the region annually celebrates Global Money Week and World Investor Week; and the
- TTSEC serves on the National Financial Education Committee (NFEC) where a national collaborative approach to financial literacy and investor education is taken.
As we continue to improve on the TTSEC’s IE programme, we hope to see:
- More participation in the capital market which will ultimately redound to the benefit of our economy;
- More knowledgeable investors;
- Increased levels of investment;
- Fewer persons falling victim to scams and
- Wealth creation for our people.
